Friends of Sandy Creek Projects

These projects were all planned by friends of the park and approved by Durhan Parks and Recreation.

  • 2004    Durham Academy Adopted Greenway Trail, Cleaned up the woods around trail, erected signs with Dennis Cullen and Durham Academy students
  • 2011    Renovated Bridge over Sandy Creek with help from Duke Students, State Parks Grant through Parks and Rec.
  • 2012    Dug and planted butterfly/pollinator garden, native shrubs, trees
  • 2012    Built Swing with the help of Duke Project Build, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Grant
  • 2013    Installed split-rail fence around park, first Durham Open Space and Trails Matching Grant through Keep Durham Beautiful
  • 2013    Started Observation Deck
  • 2014    Installed the Observation Deck Blind Wall with NCSSM Students, Joe Liles, Mini-Term
  • 2015    Installed BBQ Grills at Pavilion as an Eagle Scout Project
  • 2015    Designed and installed educational signs
  • 2015    Won Durham Appearance Commission Golden Leaf Award in the Keep Durham Beautiful Category for Observation Deck, Signs and Native Plants
  • 2015    First Monarch Festival at the Park
  • 2016    Built Chimney Swift Tower with New Hope Audubon Society
  • 2016    Began Trail Improvements on Trail to Garrett Road, Waterbury Community and Neighborhood Improvement Grant
  • 2017    Completed first short boardwalk on the Garrett Road Trail, Second DOST Matching Grant through the Durham Parks Foundation
  • 2017    Designed and installed directional signs with a Neighborhood Improvement Grant
  • 2017    Second Monarch Festival – 1000 visitors
  • 2018    Designed and built the long boardwalk on the Garrett Road Trail, DOST Grant, Lowes Grant through KDB Grant
  • 2019    Won our second Golden Belt Appearance Award in the Keep Durham Beautiful Category for Boardwalk and Garrett Road Trails.
  • 2020    Installed Clemson Beaver Pond Levelers with Sandy Creek Money and Stogner DOST Grant

Money Raised:  We have raised over $30,000 for park improvements
Received over $30,000 in matching grants
Volunteer Hours:  Over 3000 hours by well over 500 individuals
