The Silk Tree or Mimosa, like many other non-native plants, was intentionally introduced to Europe in the Eighteenth Century and shortly thereafter into the United States as an ornamental shrub. This tree is known to be allelopathic to neighboring plants, which means that is can prohibit the growth of many native plants.
Here a mimosa is crowding out a native Beauty Berry Shrub.
