Sandy Creek Park is located on the site of one of Durham's old sewage treatment plants. In the 1990's a Master Plan was written to create an environmental park on the site. In the early 2000's Durham Parks & Recreation put in restrooms and picnic facilities. Most of the recent improvements to the park are the result of grants that the park has received and the hard work of hundreds of volunteers.
Many of the improvements to the park are the result of thousands of hours of volunteer work as well as thousands of dollars in donations, and the two wonderful nonprofits, the Durham Parks Foundation and Keep Durham Beautiful.

The Durham Parks Foundation and Keep Durham Beautiful both provide essential support to the Friends of the Park. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit the Parks Foundation handles all grants and donations that have been essential to the park. Keep Durham Beautiful fulfilled this role prior to the founding of the Parks Foundation and KDB continues to assist us with grants, materials, and equipment for park projects.
If you would like to make a tax-sheltered donation to assist the Friends with their work at Sandy Creek Park, you can do so by visiting the Durham Parks Foundation (DPF) website, (www.durhamparksfoundation.org). The DPF will accept general donations for park improvements in Durham or you can designate your donation for specific locations, like Sandy Creek Park.
